Bohemian Rhapsody: A Film Review
By Emily Eade
Bohemian Rhapsody was a well thought out film about the legendary rock band Queen, directed by Bryan Singer and released November of 2018. Showing the creation of this legendary band and how it all started from the band ‘Smile’ with original band members Brian May (Gwilym Lee) and Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy). Due to the struggle of finding a bassist they found John Deacon (Joe Mazzello) who automatically connected with the band. With showing the highs and lows of Freddie Mercury’s (Rami Malek) personal life. It may have included more of Freddie Mercury’s personal life but it also shows the friendship and love between Queens band members, their fans, and Mercury’s lovers Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton) and Jim Hutton (Aaron McCusker).
Bohemian Rhapsody is a sing-along celebration of Queen's career, with the help of their legendary music, fans, and out of the world lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie Mercury went against stereotypes and showed differences between him and other rock musicians. Causing Freddie Mercury to be one of the most legendary frontman ever. The film shows the creation of the Queen to the personal life of Mercury's. It also shows love and beauty through their legendary songs. Mercury eventually got hit by the fame and parted ways from Queen. Creating Mercury’s solo career and getting involved with bad influences. Mercury suffers greatly without Queen, Mercury manages to get Queen back together just in time for Live Aid. At the time Queen came back together Mercury had faced the diagnosis of AIDS. While embracing the fact of his recent AIDS diagnosis, Mercury leads Queen through one of the most influential rock performances of all time performing in front of 72,000 people and watched by 1.5 billion people around the world. Queen continues to influence outsiders, and music lovers every single day.
The story was created to be a feel good, sing-along for Queen fans from all over to enjoy and see. Having happy moments and sad moments that all viewers could really grab onto and connect with. Showing a deeper look in Freddie Mercury’s personal life. Also giving a different point of view of the band and their family like relationships. Being one of the most influential bands of all time giving the world songs we all know like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘We Will Rock You’, and more.
The film's cinematography was quite beautifully created. Giving an unbelievable experience for all the views making them feel like they are actually there witnessing the events taking place. Having a clear view on the struggles between the band and Freddie Mercury’s sexuality.
Personally I wasn’t the biggest fan of this film. It’s just romanticizing the struggle of what Freddie Mercury had gone through. Showing the pain and suffering of not being able to come out, being treated badly by a person he trusted, being involved with dark influences, and being diagnosed with AIDS. It really gives input of how fame can cause the worst in people to come out. Which was seen through Freddie Mercury’s drug habits created by the dark influencers. Truly if you are a big fan of Queen go and watch the film. Shows friendship, love and family between the band, music, and fans. It also gives a personal story for the fans to feel connected and part of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon lives.
