BoiSad: Moments in a Beach Goons Life
By: Emily Eade
Trying to find a new style of music to listen to? I can suggest the Punk sub-genre Surf Punk, most specifically the band Beach Goons. The band was founded in 2014 by members; Pablo Cervantez (frontman), David Orozco (bassist), and Chris Moran (drummer). The band stands out because of their fast-paced, alternative surf-punk sound with an underlying Latin feel from the band's roots. The Surf Punk band’s first-ever released album BoiSad, came out in 2015 creating an image for the band. By giving anyone and everyone who listens to them an emotional experience.
They start the album with a one-minute and twenty-second song, “Choker” which gives an upbeat, fast-paced distorted sound. This creates a rush feel to the beginning of the album and a perfect draw to the band. The second song “Reservoir Dawgs” is the first hit off the album. The song starts with a slow melodic beat that goes into the fast-paced distorted sound. This causes listeners like myself to be drawn to the song. Automatically giving a “missing the person they love'' feel to the fast-paced part of the song. Emotions from the crushing character had changed completely, along with the sound and pace by the end of the song. When Pablo sings lyrics, “Maybe you can tell me how much I fucked up. I don't know what I did but I guess it's alright.” Which gave us listeners a view that he screwed up and knows there's no way to fix what he had done.
Another hit off the album is “Tar-Baby”. This song starts slow and lonely when Pablo sings, “It's Saturday and I'm feeling alone today. I wanna drink till I'm throwing up all night. I've got no friends, I've got no life, I'm sitting at home. I need some friends, I wanna smoke.” This shows that the character knows he screwed up and is feeling the consequences of what he had done. The tempo and sound pick up right after showing his anger and aggression of not being able to see the girl he loves. By the end of the song, the emotion changes as the character is trying to make it seem as if he is fine by going to parties, drinking, and smoking, but his feelings of loneliness and sadness never go away no matter how much he tries.
“Without U”, is the most emotional song on the album. The song starts with a slow melodic feel and remains the same throughout the whole track giving the sound a powerful sadness. The singer confesses that the relationship has gone through many ups and downs which causes emotional scars. The character reflects on his feelings towards the girl. The lyrics, “I tried to protect you. From my hands you left you broke my heart right there, all I do is stare, no you'll never fuckin care.” showed that all the character was trying to do was protect her, but little did he know he was hurting her instead.
The last song off the album “April 20, 1998”, starts off with a somber melody that goes into a great deal of anger. There are no lyrics, so the emotions felt are very basic to the sound of the song. BoiSad gives the overall story of the male's perspective of the modern-day love story where he screws up the relationship. By using the beat and the lyrics creating a connection to the overall feel of pain and grief stages of a person who is in love, and has lost that love.
